X per-cent would say Y!!!”

It always boggles my mind seeing what kind of dishonest and stupid arguments people make use of when trying to show you’re wrong.

X million would think you’re nuts if you claimed life ain’t that great, lacks purpose and so on” one imbecile uttered.

Now, the trouble is that this is not the case at all. Apart from the fact that X million is pulled out of thin air, as usual, no book has had more influence than the Bible, which is ripe with questions about meaning and man’s place in the universe. And without God, life is truly without purpose. In Mark 8:36 Christ Himself says:

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Further, among teenagers up to those in their early twenties, suicide rates are among the highest. While not all of those attempted and successful suicides may be the result of deep introspection, it certainly scratches such questions.

Besides, most people aren’t atheists even, meaning that their worldview is usually based on a belief system, as opposed to the hedonistic occident. One author Christopher Hallpike quoted in “Do We Need God to be Good?” coined the acronym W.E.I.R.D. for people living in the west (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic). (On a sidenode, I will point out that I don’t believe this has much to do with the Church banning marriage of cousins and step-relatives, since Japan suffers from fragmentation, narcissism, loneliness, competitiveness etc. as well.)

It follows that this train of thinking is riddled with suppositions, even downright lies. It gets tiresome and shows once more, at least to me, that the internet was a mistake.

Colombian reactionary Catholic Gómez Dávila dixit:

In the social sciences one generally weighs, counts, and measures, to avoid having to think.

Systematic reductions to single terms (pleasure and pain, self-interest, economics, sex, etc.) fabricate likenesses of intelligibility that seduce the ignorant.
